High tech company Demcon opens branch in Maastricht

Technology developer and producer Demcon (850 employees) has opened a branch at the Brightlands Health Campus in Maastricht. The high tech company, founded Enschede in 1993, has branches in the Netherlands in Best (Eindhoven), Delft, Enschede and Groningen, each close to a university. In Maastricht the company is already working with the medical faculty of Maastricht University. With this new location, Demcon aims to attract talent from the southern region of the Province of Limburg by offering challenging work whereby the proximity to Aachen in Germany and Leuven in Belgium offers opportunities. The company started out with ten employees and expects to grow considerably over the coming years.
Demcon works for diverse markets, ranging from high tech systems and life science & health to water and energy. The medical branch in particular has grown significantly over recent years, for example in the area of respiratory technology. Demcon consequently was able to develop a ventilation system at the beginning of the pandemic for corona patients in Intensive Care.
Social impact
In all of the markets in which Demcon operates, the company aims to make a contribution to solutions that have a positive impact on humans and society on the basis of its broad expertise and experience. For example, last year the company entered into a partnership with a Maastricht University spinoff to develop a system for rapidly and effectively freezing specimens to help accelerate research into diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer and TB. In addition, Demcon will be contributing to various other initiatives such as the energy transition by developing efficient and sustainable energy systems. This includes electrolyzers for the production of hydrogen from (green) power and innovative battery technology.
Challenging work
The new Demcon branch in Maastricht covers the high tech sector in the broadest sense and is not limited to medical projects. Toon Hermans, recently appointed manager of Demcon energy systems, functions as the new location’s coordinator. ‘With ten driven professionals we will start working on appealing projects from our other locations. In addition, we will also be acquiring high tech projects independently from Maastricht. This way we will be able to offer technical talent challenging work in their own region. We have significant growth ambitions and expect Maastricht to become of interest to additional high tech companies.’
Investing in the region
Maastricht is a strategic location for Demcon, business unit manager medical systems Edwin Beckers explains. ‘There are opportunities for us in South Limburg and across the border in Germany and Belgium. Maastricht has an interesting university that not only has a medical faculty, but is also expanding its technical education program. The largest and highest-ranked technical university in Germany is located in Aachen. We know that many residents from the Province of Limburg are studying technology and engineering there and now we will be able to offer them an interesting job in Maastricht. Various research institutes, where we perceive opportunities, are located in Leuven. In addition to Maastricht University, we also want to start working closely with the University of Applied Sciences Zuyd, for example by providing internships and graduation projects, and by starting up joint research projects. Just like we do in our other locations, we aim to take responsibility for the Maastricht region. We primarily do this by promoting entrepreneurship and by investing in talent and education.’
