As part of the Demcon group TSST (Twente Solid State Technology) builds advanced equipment for Pulsed Laser Deposition. With this, specific materials can be applied layer by layer to a substrate, such as chips, solar cells or displays. The layers are meant to improve the performance of the substrate, think of camera chips that give a better image or solar cells that get a higher yield. The strength of TSST lies in the development of customer specific systems, they are capable to develop and deliver systems with extreme specifications within a very short time frame.
Pulsed Laser Deposition works with a powerful pulsed laser beam that allows material to evaporate controlled so that it can then deposit on the substrate in a layer (thin film). This process takes place in ultra-high vacuum, to prevent contamination, or in the presence of a gas, such as oxygen, to deposit oxides of the desired material.
TSST supplies the equipment and accessories to university research centers worldwide. In addition, the company participates in scientific research, carries out substrate treatments itself when commissioned and takes care of the transfer of knowledge about thin film growth. A new development of TSST concerns high-quality heaters that have to bring the substrate up to the right temperature for making high-quality and uniform layers.
Besides the fact that the technology contributes to development in general via university research centers, its application is almost always a more efficient use of equipment. In the case of solar cells, for example, it leads to a higher yield in the field of sustainable energy. This suits Demcon’s philosophy to help society move forward in parallel to business operations.
