Metal powder injection moulding (MIM) is the specialism of Demcon metal injection moulding. This production technology is highly suited to highly accurate production of products for which stringent requirements are imposed, including a long service life. Derived from plastic injection moulding, metal powder injection moulding has the same advantages, namely freedom of form in the design and cost-efficient production of medium to large series.
The opportunities for the technology lie primarily in the combination of multi-million volumes (or of relatively small volumes of some 5,000 units per year) and high product complexity, in fields such as the medical technology and automotive industries. MIM products can be found in car engines, sealing systems for fire doors and surgical instruments, for instance. A low unit price makes applications such as disposables attractive. This fits with a trend in the medical world: cleaning and sterile packaging for re-use is expensive, while disposables eliminate risks.
Demcon metal injection moulding is primarily distinctive for its environmentally friendly base materials for the production process, developed in-house. This ‘feedstock’ determines the quality with which the metal powder can be shaped into compact, high-quality products in the furnace. Demcon metal injection moulding not only supplies products, but also feedstock and licences for production know-how.
In association with the Demcon group we can set up dedicated production lines, for specific MIM products, with automation (pick & place) or full robotisation. The lines are equipped with machine vision solutions for 100% control, and a coordinates measuring machine is available for sample control for form tolerances. Thanks to this stringent quality control, Demcon metal injection moulding can supply complex, high-quality products with high reliability.
