DEMCON develops and produces embedded systems for a range of products in a variety of markets. An embedded system is an integrated electronic control for a machine or device, where the combination of hardware and software produce the intelligent behaviour. Embedded systems are part of almost all DEMCON projects that are realised for the other business units. DEMCON also applies embedded systems in other application areas, e.g. Agri & Food, Consumer Lifestyle and Industrial Control Technology.
DEMCON has a wide range of embedded technologies, and integrates the hardware and software for embedded systems in multidisciplinary projects. The engineering process begins with system engineering, so that the entire system is defined, i.e. including sensors, actuators, enclosures, environmental factors etc. The system engineer takes the lead in this, and involves all the required disciplines in the design. The work to realise the hardware and software engineering then follows from this.
An important choice in a project’s initial phase is the hardware, particularly the operating platform based on COTS hardware (Off The Shelf) or custom-built electronics on which the software will run. Depending on the performance and capacity requirements, this could be a microcontroller or application processor, an embedded PC, an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), a DSP (Digital Signal Processor), or a combination of these. DEMCON’s software engineers are familiar with all the options and can spread functionality across the various platforms if needed.
DEMCON also has considerable experience in designing and producing electronics and other hardware, from prototype to series production. In production terms, this is the assembly of standard purchased parts and standard components, with the focus in the design phase being on cost price, reliability, maintainability and test strategies. DEMCON has the required DfX expertise to this end, such as Design for Cost, Design for Manufacturing, and Design for Testing.
DEMCON also follows the characteristic multidisciplinary design approach for embedded systems. The trusted V model represents a systematic, cyclical process, and is applicable in every phase of a (mechatronic) development trajectory. If the emphasis is on the software, for instance, then DEMCON switches to a well-known method like Scrum or Agile. In all instances, the delivered embedded system fulfils the specifications.
